September is Organic Food Products Month

September is Organic Food products month!

Organic September, an annual campaign by UK’s Soil Association, is designed to raise consumer awareness on the benefits of choosing organic food products over synthetic ones. These include organic foods and organic supplements and vitamins.

What is Organic Food?

Organic food is food produced by methods and processes that comply with the standards of organic farming. They generally promote practices that enhance ecological balance and  conserve biodiversity. Organizations regulating organic products typically restrict the use of certain pesticides and fertilizers in farming.

Why Choose Organic Foods and Supplements?

Organic food is good food. It is better food.

And the Soil Association strives to make it an easy choice for everyone.

Organic foods with the organic symbol from the Soil Association are produced to the highest standards. It means…

  • fewer pesticides. Almost 300 pesticides are used in non-organic farming, many of which remain in the food we eat, despite washing and cooking.
  • no artificial colours, additives or preservatives
  • the highest standards of animal welfare
  • no Genetically Modified ingredients and crops
  • they come from trusted sources. All organic farms and food companies in the UK are inspected at least once a year and the standards for organic food are laid down in European law
  • they meet a strict set of standards as to what farmers and food manufacturers can and cannot do in the production process. Hydrogenated fats are banned. Artificial methods, materials and conditions like chemical ripening, food irradiation and industrial solvents are minimized or avoided.

Tips when Buying Organic Supplements

In the same way as organic foods, organic supplements and vitamins are also preferred over synthetic ones  because of their overall effectiveness and health benefits less the side effects. Here are a few tips.

  1. Look for supplements with concentrated forms (extracts) of liver, wheat germ, and superfood and superfruit combinations like powdered beets, wheat grass, barley grass, acai berry, goji, etc.
  2. Avoid those with terms like: acetate, bitartrate, chloride, gluconate, hydrochloride, nitrate, and succinate. They are synthetic ingredients.
  3. Check out for fillers like rice bran and lecithin. Superfoods are expensive that is why some manufacturers add fillers.
  4. Look for the logo of an organic certifying body such as the Soil Association Logo.
